What is JavaScript?
JavaScript is a programming language used to create interactive and dynamic web pages. It is primarily used for developing front-end web applications, enabling developers to manipulate HTML elements and control the behavior of websites.
However, it can also be used for back-end programming, which allows developers to build server-side applications and interact with databases.
In addition, JavaScript is platform-independent, which means it can run on different operating systems without requiring modifications or additional software tools.
This makes it one of the world’s most widely used programming languages, powering some of the largest websites on the internet today.
Furthermore, its versatility and ease of use have made it an attractive option for both beginners and professionals. With a vast array of libraries and frameworks available, JavaScript can be used for many projects, from small personal websites to large enterprise applications.
The Origins of JavaScript
JavaScript was created in 1995 by Brendan Eich while he was working at Netscape Communications. It was originally called Mocha but was later renamed to JavaScript.
Java, Scheme, and Self-inspired the language, and it quickly became a popular choice for web development.
JavaScript is now one of the core technologies of the World Wide Web, alongside HTML and CSS. It has been used to create interactive websites and applications, making it an essential tool for modern web development.
The history of JavaScript is full of bumps and changes as it has evolved. Despite this, it remains a powerful and versatile language that developers worldwide use.
Example of Javascript in WordPress
<form id="my-form"> <input type="text" name="name" id="name" placeholder="Name"> <input type="email" name="email" id="email" placeholder="Email"> <input type="submit" value="Submit"> </form> <script> (function($) { var form = $('#my-form'); var nameInput = form.find('#name'); var emailInput = form.find('#email'); // Disable the submit button when the form is submitted form.on('submit', function() { form.find('input[type=submit]').prop('disabled', true); }); // Validate the name and email fields when they lose focus nameInput.on('blur', function() { if (nameInput.val().length < 3) { nameInput.addClass('error'); } else { nameInput.removeClass('error'); } }); emailInput.on('blur', function() { if (!emailInput.val().match(/^\w+@[a-zA-Z_]+?\.[a-zA-Z]{2,3}$/)) { emailInput.addClass('error'); } else { emailInput.removeClass('error'); } }); })(jQuery); </script>
In this example, we’re using JavaScript to create a simple form with two input fields (name and email), add some interactivity to the form to validate the input fields, and disable the submit button when submitted.
- First, we create a form with two input fields and a submit button. We give the form an ID of my-form, and each input field has a unique ID and a placeholder attribute.
- Next, we use jQuery to select the form element and the input fields and define some event handlers for the form and input fields.
- When the form is submitted, we use the prop() method to disable the submit button so that the user can’t submit the form multiple times.
- When the name and email input fields lose focus (when the user clicks away from the field), we use a simple validation function to check if the input is valid. If the input is invalid, we add an error class to the input field to highlight it to the user. If the input is valid, we remove the error class.
You can use JavaScript to build all kinds of interactive forms in WordPress, from simple contact forms to complex multi-step forms. Follow best practices for using JavaScript in WordPress, such as properly enqueuing scripts and avoiding conflicts with other libraries.
