One of this year’s most popular gifts, LOL Surprise, will be using biodegradable plastic and paper in 2020. This is in an effort to make the company, MGA Entertainment, more environmentally responsible.
In case you have been living under a rock, LOL Surprise is one of the most popular dolls on the market. And are sure to be at the top of many Christmas lists. It is estimated in just this year alone, they will make over 500 million dollars, but they do have one problem.
There is a lot of plastic packaging included.
However, by switching to biodegradable plastic and paper, the company can cut the impact on the environment significantly.
How Much Plastic Is In Each Package?
LOL Surprise packages are full of plastic, literally.
To start off with, the entire package is wrapped up in plastic shrink wrap. The package itself is composed entirely of plastic. When opened, you will see a plastic casing that holds multiple doll parts ready for assembly.
However, first, you will need to remove each part from its own plastic bag. And of course, the parts are made of plastic.
When you look at some of the smaller sets that contain 3 parts, you might think it’s not a big deal. However, they have larger products that contain up to 95 parts. And yes, they all get their own plastic wrapping.
Biodegradable Plastic and Paper Packaging Will Fix It
Of course, this raises the question, how exactly will these dolls be made safer for the environment?
For starters, the plastic used will be made biodegradable. Considering that over 800 million LOL Surprise dolls have been sold since their debut, this will have a serious impact.
However, they will also be removing the interior plastic wrappings and replacing them with paper. This will significantly reduce the amount of plastic thrown away, especially on larger sets.
Dolls Will Be Recyclable
On top of this MGA Entertainment has also partnered with Terracycle to help recycle the dolls.
Customers will be able to send packaging and the dolls themselves in top be recycled. The dolls will then be broken down and used to create new ones.
