We’ve been offering VPS Hosting for quite some time now. We like to give our customers options for when it comes to hosting and that’s why we offer a wide array of hosting solutions, virtual private servers being one of them. However, not a lot of customers know what a VPS is and/or how it works. I’ll try to clear that up and try to make some sense out of it for you.
So what exactly is VPS Hosting?
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server and is essentially a server within a larger host server, often called a hardware node. What we’re able to do is take a server with lots of resources (CPU, Memory, Disk Space, etc) and slice it down to smaller servers through virtualization technology. The smaller servers or VPS’ look and feel the same as a dedicated server except that they are residing on hardware that is shared with other VPS’.
You might be asking, well that sounds a lot like your shared hosting… so how is VPS any different?
With shared hosting, yes you’re sharing server resources, but you’re also sharing the operating system, configurations, file system and computing resources aren’t dedicated to your shared hosting account. On the other hand with a VPS, the operating system, configurations and file system are unique to your VPS. Also, resources that are allocated are dedicated to your VPS. So you’ll be able to start, stop, restart, re-install a VPS just like you would a dedicated server without impacting other customers on the hardware node.
So is VPS Hosting good for me?
VPS Hosting is great for those customers who are looking for greater control, flexibility and performance for their websites than our standard shared hosting can provide and is generally the next step in the upgrade path from shared hosting.
It’s also great for developers where you’re able to use system root access to install customized server software and modules that otherwise would not be available to them on our shared hosting platform.
I hope this has helped those that were confused at what a VPS is and how it can benefit your online presence. If you have any questions or comments, leave a comment or contact our support team and we’ll be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have.
Thank you for hosting Green!
